It was in 1850 that Councelor Carlos Morato Roma inaugurated the Villa Roma in Sintra, a residence for the family during summer time. You can still feel the romantic aura in its rooms and garden.
Some of the personalities who lived here were Carlos Morato Roma, who was Director of Public Treasury; Dr. José Vicente Barbosa du Bocage, professor, Overseas and Foreign Affairs Minister and Peer of the Realm; General Carlos Roma du Bocage, who at the end of his life was Foreign Affairs Minister of King D. Manuel II, MP and Peer of the Realm; Dr. António Maria Barbosa, medical doctor of the Royal Family and member of the Royal Academy of Science, Dr. José Inácio Machado de Faria e Maia, who was Prosecutor, Judge, Secretary of the Attorney General of the Crown and Auditor of the Councils of War in Lisbon, among others.
King D. Fernando was a regular visitor of Villa Roma, as were politicians like Latino Coelho and Alexandre Herculano.
